Sony Storms Indian Market with Xperia Z1, QX10 & QX100 with Aggressive Pricing

Just a fortnight after they announced their flagship Android smartphone, the Xperia Z1, Sony is bringing it to the Indian market right away. Along with the Xperia Z1, Sony India announced the launch of the hugely impressive DSC-QX100 and DSC-QX10 lens type camera attachments, and Sony Smartwatch 2 as well in an event held in New Delhi earlier today.

Sony Xperia Z1 Priced at Rs.44990 in India

The Sony Xperia Z1 comes with a 5-inch 1080p triluminous display. It’s powered by the Snapdragon 800 processor clocked at 2.2 GHz alongside 2GB of RAM. It comes with 16GB of internal storage, along with a microSD slot. The phone runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean and comes with 3000 mAh non-removable battery.
As with the previous smartphones in Xperia Z range, the Xperia Z1 is also waterproof. We had the opportunity to play around the smartphone at IFA 2013 in Berlin, and were pretty impressed with what Sony has to offer in their latest flagship. Its camera is its biggest selling point and thankfully, Sony hasn’t messed it up this time. The 20.7 MP camera on the rear can take stunning pictures in both daylight and low light conditions. Sony has beefed up the camera app with features like burst mode, panorama mode, action shot and others.
In an aggressive move, Sony has priced the Xperia Z1 at Rs.44,990 (~$700). That might sound ridiculously high for a smartphone, but considering the rate at which INR has fallen in comparison to the USD, we should pat Sony India for keeping the price at Rs.45k. In comparison, Samsung launched the Galaxy Note 3 in India yesterday at Rs.49,900 (~$775)! And the best part, Xperia Z1 is available starting TODAY!
As an introductory offer, Sony is bundling a free 5000mAh portable charger, a premium case and Xperia Accidental Damage insurance with every Xperia Z1 smartphone. The deal looks sweeter now, isn’t it?

DSC-QX100 & DSC-QX10 Priced at Rs.12990 & Rs.24990 Respectively

Alongside Xperia Z1, Sony also announced that the impressive camera lens attachments we saw at IFA are coming to India as well. These lens style cameras basically turn your smartphone into a power-packed camera. Both of them are compatible with all Android phones and iPhones. They connect to the smartphone via NFC or WiFi. The smartphone’s display acts as the viewfinder, while the lenses themselves have manual controls and memory card slot.
The QX100 comes with a 20.2-megapixel Exmor R CMOS sensor and an f/1.8 Carl Zeiss lens with 3.6X optical zoom. It weighs about 179g. The QX10, on the other hand, comes with an 18.2-megapixel Exmor R CMOS sensor with 10x zoom and an f/3.5-3.9 Sony G lens, while weighing just 105g.
The QX100 is priced at Rs.24990 (~$390), while the QX10 is priced at Rs.12990 (~$200). It’s interesting to note that these prices are much lesser than what Sony has fixed for US markets ($499 and $299 respectively). Very aggressive pricing indeed! And guess what? Both of them are available starting today.

Sony Smartwatch 2 priced at Rs.14990

Sony is also bringing its newest smartwatch iteration, the Smartwatch 2 to India. It’s priced at Rs.14990 (~$230) which is again pretty aggressive. Samsung launched the Galaxy gear smartwatch for Rs.22990 (~$350). The Sony Smartwatch 2 was announced earlier this year, and hasn’t seen much success yet. It’s essentially a smartphone companion device that is water-resistant and supports NFC to easily pair with compatible Android devices. It will be available from October this year.
Overall, we are pretty impressed with the approach of Sony Mobiles in India. The company is not only keeping the prices aggressive, they are making sure that the devices are available for purchase immediately. In addition, Sony plans to have 300 Xperia flagship stores and has a target of Rs.3500 crore from smartphones this year.
