BlackBerry isn’t going down without a fight. The struggling Canadian giant has just announced the successor to the Z10 smartphone, the BlackBerry Z30 which comes with a bigger 5-inch Super AMOLED screen and the latest version of their relatively new OS, the BB 10.2.
The display is still not Full HD and pales in comparison to Z10 in
terms of PPI (pixels per inch) count, but has beefed up the internals.
The Z30 is powered by Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor clocked at
1.7 GHz and comes with 2GB of RAM. The CPU is paired with Adreno 320
GPU, similar to the one we saw in the Nexus 4. BlackBerry has also
beefed up the battery. We now have a bigger 2880 mAh battery pack which
is non-removable.
The Z30 is slightly thicker than the Z10 at 9.4mm and a bit heavier too, but that’s understandable since it’s bigger as well. The internal storage remains to be 16GB, but comes with a microSD slot which can push the storage to up to 64GB. Z30 will support 4G LTE, dual-band WiFi a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC. The rear camera is still the same 8MP snapper, while the front facer is a 2MP one.
The real enhancements are in terms of improved signal reception in low signal areas. Z30 comes with a better antenna to achieve the same. BlackBerry is clearly targeting the enterprise crowd with BB 10.2 with features like BB Priority Hub, a feature similar to Gmail’s Priority Inbox, except BlackBerry’s implementation indexes your emails, texts and BBMs, along with your social networking communications. With BB 10.2, users will be able to preview messages throughout the UI and on the lockscreen, which wasn’t possible with earlier OS versions.
There are no pricing and availability information for the BlackBerry Z30. It’s set to hit the Middle East and UK first, sometime next week, followed by US and other markets later this year.
