GTA 5 Sets Amazing Sales Record: $1 Billion in Three Days

Gaming piracy is a problem, they say, but when you manage to have sales accounting to $1,000,000,000 in just 3.0 days, it really makes you hold on tight to your seat. When I first heard the news that tt took only 24 hours for the latest Grand Theft Auto to earn $800 million, then I realized they are going to break the one billion barrier quite soon. It now has happened, and Grand Theft Auto thus becomes the fastest-selling video game in the world.

The game’s publisher, Take-Two Interactive, announced that GTA V has managed to surpass $1 billion in sales, setting another record. Furthermore, the company believes that this actually represents a record not only for games, but also for the entire entertainment industry:
"We believe this marks the fastest that any entertainment property, including video games and feature films, has reached this significant milestone"
Previously, it took Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 fifteen days to top the $1 billion in 2012. For example, it took The Avengers movies 19 days to top $1 billion at the box office. Even more, both the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 and Avatar movies hit $1 billion also in the same amount of time. Grand Theft Auto V beat these three biggest film launches of all time by more than two weeks, 16 days to be more precies.
As of know, we still don’t know the exact number of GTA V sold copies of the game, but a roughball figure should amount to 17 million, if we consider $60 as the selling price. But there is also the $79.99 Special Edition and the GameStop-exclusive Collector’s Edition for $149.99.
Strauss Zelnick, chairman and CEO of Take-Two, said in a recent statement:
Grand Theft Auto is a cultural phenomenon and Rockstar Games continues to redefine what can be achieved in interactive entertainment. We are incredibly proud of the extraordinary critical and commercial response to Grand Theft Auto 5.
Rockstar raised many eyebrows when they disclosed that they have spent an estimated $265 million on the development of Grand Theft Auto V, but it now proves to be a very smartly-planned investment. By the way, GTA 5 is also the most expensive game ever made. Previously, analyst thought GTA 5 would make “only” around $1.4 billion, but they will definitely have to change their estimates, as this widely-popular game has not even passed its first week of sales and there are still markets like Japan and Brazil that have yet to welcome the game.
